First off I need to say Im a girl who is NOT computer or tech savy....Im in the medical field. I read almost ALL the reviews for this router, the D-Link and the cisco Linksys routers (because they were the Amazon top 3 routers) and found myself completely confused and not sure which to buy.
My Dad recommended I buy the Cisco Linksys because " its been around the longest! A leader name in the field, its cheap, and mine has worked for over 7 years perfectly!" Unfortunately my boyfriend had just recently purchased one of the linksys routers for those reasons, and he had to reset his router almost daily because it kept losing connection, despite the internet working perfectly if he plugged into the ethernet cord. So I was reluctant to buy that router.....
Next in line in my comparisons, the new D-Link 655 router, the white one under one of the amazon best sellers list, seemed great...had great reviews...and was supp to be like 16x faster with the newest technology.... but was about $10 more, and had a few reviews stating it overheated a lot or was hot to touch, hard to set-up, and that the new configuration to "N" network or something which is too techy for me to understand would or may become restandardized or something and older computers might not work with it. Then I read all these medialink router reviews which were also great giving the most 5 star ratings, it was the amazon top seller, it was cheap....but its reviews stated they thought these 5 star reviews were all fake and from medialink employees ( this was also written under the discussion chats or forums on the amazon medialink page) and that set-up was difficult and it wasnt a name brand people knew for making routers... So again I was skeptic and left feeling so confused about which router was the best to buy that I even went so far as to type in "best wireless routers" on google and search under techy websites and CNET for reviews on these 3 routers I was contemplating buying to figure out which was the best for me. But even after spending about 10 hours total reading reviews on all 3 top listed amazon routers...I was undecided about which to buy and just stopped thinking about it and quit reading reviews for a week or so. Eventually I got back on Amazon....read some more reviews comparing the D-link and this medialink router and decided to just go with this one because 1.I needed a wireless router bc trying to surf off unsecured free wifi networks in my apt complex was getting bothersome and was continually booting me off with low signal strengths ...2. It was cheaper and Im broke being on a resident salary 3. Nothing said it overheated 4. It IS listed as the #1 Amazon top seller for wireless routers with mainly 5 star reviews(which has to mean something right?) 5. medialink responded to the allegations of these reviews being fake on one of the discussion blogs on the amazon medialink webpage...and lastly 6. because I could always return it!!
So I am writing the longest review ever to say 1. ITs AWESOME! 2. I opened the box, read the quick start pamplet and set up this router with my acer netbook in less than 10 min without using any CD...just using the quick start pamplet instructions!!! Once I followed everything it said to, I unhooked the ethernet cord frrom my computer and looked up avail wireless networks, saw the wifi network I had created avail for my choices and clicked on it entering the password I had made up. My computer connected effortlessly...THEN I couldnt get the internet to work :( ....I figured "THIS must be what they're talking about! I shouldve bought a different router!" But then I thought, " wait a minute maybe I just need to restart my computer"...I did that, clicked to connect on my netowork...entered my password and it worked PERFECTLY!!!
THIS WAS BY FAR THE EASIEST QUICKEST ROUTER I HAVE EVER SET UP AND IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!! Ive been on it now for 6 hrs...no problems...it looks sleek and easily hideable ( my ethernet connection is in my living room for my router, so it has to be hidden in here) and it WORKS GREAT!! Last things to say- the lights on it are NOT that bright...I dont know who wrote that review, and medialink will send you a nice email after you buy this and give you contact info to reach them should you have any problems connecting...which is nice but of course I didnt need them!
So.... so far so good, customer service is there, it looks cute and small, easy set-up and it WORKS FAST and GOOD!!! I highly recommend this wireless router!! And I will update this review in 6 mos to let you know how it is functioning. :) Thanks for a great buy amazon! And sorry for the extremely lengthy review but i really wanted ppl to know this is a GREAT buy!! Trust the 5 stars!
The first thing to say that is impressive: I received an email from Mediabridge Products before the package even arrived, thanking me for the purchase and offering tech support contact info if I needed help installing it. Then again after the product arrived. A good start. Fortunately for us both, Mediabridge puts enough quality into their product, and their setup documentation is great, that I didn't need their help. But boy, I sure appreciate the offer. That's customer service.
The second good impression was the quickstart guide that comes with the product. All in plain, clear English, concise and to the point, step by step instructions with the most common pitfalls listed. I have not seen any quickstart guide for a product as great as theirs. It even included a separate sheet for DSL modem versus cable modem installation. That's thorough. Also, the guide clearly indicated that the CD was not required but provided only for the purpose of helping with installation if needed. No drivers must be installed to use the product and the manufacturer makes that known upfront. It's about time. THANK YOU.
And save the best for last: it was a snap to set up and it works wonderfully. At the time, I told my wife, "I'm trying a new router." That's all I said. It worked great immediately, and now a week later, today my wife commented, "Whatever you did to the internet, it works a lot better now." Our connection has not been interrupted yet, and for all computers, wired and wireless, it seems to have a little more zip. As for wireless (which my wife wouldn't know about, only I have the laptop, her desktop is wired), I have not had a dropped connection yet. Speed is slightly better than my previous products, around 72-75 Mbps with N protocol, which I have come to believe that 150 is a "laboratory technical ideal" speed that isn't going to happen in the real world. At least with my Lenovo SL400. Perhaps others have achieved the higher speed. At any rate, after three routers, this one is rating the best speed, and I don't fault any of them for not reaching the advertised 150 Mbps. For working on the internet, 75 Mbps is more than enough.
I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a wireless router for home use. Even business use, for that matter. It's that reliable.
EDIT 8/8/2011: Tomorrow will be a month. It's working great. No dropped connections. So far, I love this thing.
EDIT 1/16/2012: About six months now. I haven't reset the router yet (other than power failures beyond my control) and it is still working great. Highly recommended. Also, I see some reviewers claiming trouble with their Kindle Fire. Can't imagine why. I got one for Christmas and it hooked up to the Medialink router with no trouble. Streams movies just fine.
EDIT 9/19/2012: Over a year and I can't say enough good about this product. It simply works without fail. Far superior to my previous D-Link and LinkSys products.
