The Amazon fire phone has not won me over yet but the earphones have. Volume +/- does not work on cord with iPhone 5s as others have said but I don't care because the one on the phone works just fine. The middle button acts as a pause. Amazon premium headphones don't have included ear tips as with Earpods and others styled like it. However, to get bass I like and gain a snug fit that won't fall out I use 'Acoustibuds' tips with these. These are also sold on Amazon. This is my review of the combination of both:1) Sound quality: I have purchased dozens of earphones. For $15, theses are the best sounding earphones across the frequency range I have listened to so far - Bass, Mid & High frequency. EarPods are a close second but cost more.2) Stays in: Amazon mostly copied the EarPod shape then added features to it. A good start but the added grip of the Acoustibuds ear tips holds secures them firmly in place without shifting around in your ear or falling out.3) No Tangles: The wires are a combination of flat wire to the jack and round to the ears. What is unique is that if you try to tie either wire style in a knot the knot does not hold. The insulation and wire combination has a natural ability to untangle. This combined with the magnet that that prevents snags between the wires and buds and there is no need for any kind of cord wrap device. Wires are light in weight and do not tug on the ears. A great combination!
I've been using this regularly for nearly a year, and I thought this deserves some praise among various criticisms. I bought these specifically because I was looking for a pair of non-in-ear earphones and, having liked the Apple EarPods in the past, wanted at least the same features and build and sound quality. So I'll be closely and comprehensively comparing Amazon's earbuds to Apple's EarPods, since I also use in-ear earphones occasionally for different purposes when I DO want to lose spatial awareness.
Build quality: I saw some pretty scary stories and pictures of these earphones falling apart, and I've had none of that. I'm not especially rough on my earphones, but I'm not kind to them either--I crumple or fold them up and stuff them in my pocket, snag them on various objects, and occasionally fall asleep wearing them rolling all over the sensitive parts (namely the jack, the remote/mic, and the soft plastic between the actual earphones and wire). So I was afraid but expecting to one day wake up accidentally having fallen asleep wearing them to find them in pieces. But after some pretty decent durability tests, these feel just the way they did when I first got them, nothing bending in weird ways or loosening up or tattered. Apple EarPods also impressed me with its durability, lasting strong for nearly a year before the infamous rubber bits started breaking apart and causing serious problems--the difference is that I'm not worried the Amazon earphones will suffer anything like that anytime soon.
Sound quality: The sound quality is good for the ~$20 bracket of earphones this occupies. Obviously it should be used in a fairly quiet environment to fully enjoy it, but it can be used for music, podcasts, calling, or whatever else on a busy street. Regarding microphonics: there is an acceptable amount of noise from the cable or wire bumping on your torso, tables, or such, making it go-to for me to use while running or exercising. The audio quality itself is comparable to Apple EarPods: clear treble and just enough bass to be satisfying, though it will sound subdued or muddled when comparing with considerably more costly, superior products. As others have said and in my personal comparison, these do sound slightly better than Apple EarPods, so if you've owned and reasonably liked EarPods, they shouldn't disappoint. I like the similar acoustic design (which Amazon basically took from Apple), which I do agree intrinsically improve the sound quality over the typical and classic earphones design.
Design: I'm happy that the only real reputable alternative I could find to Apple EarPods also has a sleek design--and black for those like me who like EarPods but don't use Apple products, unlike the Apple EarPods that come only in white! Aside from the awkwardly complex shape of the earphone casing itself (compared to the Apple EarPod's impressive minimal design) that I imagine was done mostly to avoid complaints of directly stealing the EarPod design, I like everything about how it's designed. It's not perfect, but I at least don't dislike anything in particular.
The jack is encased in a somewhat stiff yet flexible plastic that I'm still concerned may break under extremes, but it has not loosened or begun to fall apart and bending it 45 degrees along its flat surface or 15 degrees against its flat surface as you pocket your phone seems to be fine. The cable up to the remote is matte and flat and pleasing to the touch. The remote itself is a complementary smooth and matte hard plastic with satisfyingly clicky buttons; the top half still worries me since it doesn't seem fully secure and can shift slightly side-to-side, but it still hasn't inadvertently fallen off or caused problems. The wires up to the earphones are fairly standard and thin, though also has the soft, rubbery feel of the flat cable. In place of the hard plastic shaft beneath the Apple EarPods that I preferred, these have a similar plastic as that around the jack but slightly harder (though more flexible being thinner); I also worried that these would have problem with durability, but they miraculously seem to hold up well and I've gotten used to them. The earphones themselves fit very similarly to EarPods and I wholeheartedly agree with other reviewers who recommended Amazon's earphones for those who have successfully used Apple's; although my ears have very occasionally felt uncomfortable after long periods of use, though something I have never experienced with EarPods. The magnetic earbuds is a nice touch that does help lessen (not prevent) tangling, alongside the helpfulness of the flat cable. The concave indent on the side of the right earbud and the convex on the left is easy to use to distinguish the left and right apart by touch, especially since the Amazon design is still confusing for me to tell apart on sight or feel compared to the intuitive sense I had with Apple's.
Overall: Of course, one thing I was happy that Amazon's earphones had that Apple's didn't was that its volume remote DOES work on Android.
Your experience obviously may vary. Yours may happen to break quickly or it won't fit well in your ears, but I think Amazon designed a great and affordable pair of general-purpose, one-size-fits-all earphones for as many people as they could. Amazon puts up a really impressive clone/alternative to Apple's EarPods. It takes the problems of the EarPods and improves on them while capitalizing on the strengths of the EarPods, giving me more confidence in Amazon earphone's longevity. Nonetheless, I am still watching the stability of spots common to fail in earphones, which seem a bit flimsier and weaker than I want (though perhaps its flexibility is actually its strength...like going limp when taking an impact!).
I will update this review when or if issues arise. I will also try to update this review in another 6 months or a year, which was when my problematic pair of Apple EarPods was retired for Amazon's earphones.
I'll start off by saying that I personally do not like the rubber in-ear style headphones. They plug up my ears and make me feel like I have a sinus infectio,n more than create awesome sound cancellation. I've tried various in-ear plugs from; Skullcandy, Philips, Sony, Yurbuds, and even Bose. None of them fit they way I like, which is exactly like my Apple Earpods. The Earpods aren't the best sounding headphones in the world but, they fit and they sound good enough for day to day use. However, the mic doesn't work on the PS4, the buttons do not work on android devices and they don't work at on with my Zoom G3 guitar pedal. This is due to the fact that Apple reversed the bands on the tip for the "ground" and "mic" from the standard positioning, for whatever reason.
I bought the Amazon Premium Headphones because they look like they fit the same as the Earpods and they seem like they'll work in the devices I want to use. I can happily confirm that they work great in my Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the buttons operate the music playback functions in the Google Play Music app and the volume is adjustable from the headphones as well. They also work in the PS4 quite nice. The Apple earpod would make a loud hiss from the mic when gaming online but, The amazon phones work like a charm for chatting. The phones are comfortable if you like the Earpod style, the magnetic backs are clever and useful (this is the only thing I miss from my zune) and the flat wire means its less likely to tangle. To be honest, I'm so happy that I've found these I might just buy 3; one for my car, one for work and one for home!
Pros
- Fits just like Apple Earpods - Flat Wire (tangle free) - Works with most Android devices - Mic Works with PS4
Cons
- Mic quality is mediocre at best (to be expected on $15 headphones) - Mic sits kinda low on the wire - Sound quality is consistent with its comparably priced competition (this could be a Pro or Con) - Poor Marketing, where have these been!
