GAMEPLAY
This is where Resistance has always shined, and the 3rd installment does not disappoint. There were plenty of tweaks done to the game design that I feel improves the game over the previous title (Resistance 2). Returning is the weapon wheel as well as my personal favorite, health packs! That's right, no more regenerating health (except if you enable it via cheats). This gives Resistance 3 a bit of an old school feel to it that I enjoyed. Resistance 3 will take you through the campaign at a steady pace, throwing you against a variety of Chimera, including some pretty awesome boss encounters. There is plenty of action to go around with some encounters giving you a sense of being overwhelmed. On easier difficulties this isn't to bad, but I could easily see harder difficulties making spots like these put up a big fight; a big plus for those who enjoy some challenge.
Weapons have also undergone some improvements, having an upgrade system built into them. More you use a weapon, the better you become with it essentially. With each tier upgrade the weapon becomes vastly more effective and by the time you are making that final push to the end, these upgrades will come in handy. Controls feel very responsive and weapons feel like the pack a good punch. Overall Resistance 3 feels like a hybrid of Resistance 1 and 2. What didn't work in either game has been removed, or polished up to fit beautifully into Resistance 3. It makes for some seriously enjoyable gameplay.
** I Do not have MOVE so I was unable to test the MOVE features **
GRAPHICS
When it comes to graphics, Resistance 3 felt a little lacking; especially when compared to other PS3 exclusives. I wouldn't call the graphics "dated", in fact they are pretty good, but there are areas where you can tell some more polishing might of been necessary. Facial animations seem a bit rigid at times, and the environments themselves feel lacking for some reason. I think this had a lot to do with the art style and color pallet the game chose in various areas. Some come across very bland and dry, while others can feel very vibrant and crisp. Overall, graphics is not the strong point of Resistance 3, but still does more than enough to give some visual appeal.
** Due to lack of a 3D TV I was unable to test how good the 3D is for this game **
SOUND/STORY
When it comes to audio I was very impressed. Voice acting was above average, and sound effects were top notch. Weapons sounded great, explosions.. chimera.. it all sounds really good, and helps to immerse you into the gameplay. Story wise I'd say it was okay. Unlike Resistance 1 and 2, where there were some shocking twists and turns of events, Resistance 3 doesn't have that shock factor this time around (in my opinion). Still the game has a solid enough storyline that will keep you very interested as you follow Joseph Capelli 4 years after the events of Resistance 2.
REPLAY/LENGTH
The campaign for Resistance 3 runs around 6-9 hours depending on skill and difficulty. I went through the game in about 7 hours, but I also was playing on Easy. The campaign length feels appropriate plus there are plenty of reasons to revisit the SP campaign. Unlockable cheats can make the game easier/harder depending on which cheats you activate; and there is online/split-screen Co-Op campaign. Adding to the replay value of the game is the MP element, which sadly is scaled down compared to Resistance 2. Despite scaled down map size, the MP element is still fun, although fairly standard to what is out there today. You gain experience and level up the more you play. Gain perks and upgrades which you use to better your play. It feels generic but it can be a lot of fun! Overall there is plenty of replay value here from Co-Op to cheats to Multi-player .
OVERALL 90% (9.0 ... A-)
Overall Resistance 3 is a quality title. It brings the entire package to create an enjoyable title, while satisfying the Resistance fans. The game mechanics feel well polished and focused, as if the developer took the time to note what players liked and didn't like. Some areas of the game took a hit; mainly that the graphics aren't top notch, and the MP is clearly scaled back compared to Resistance 2.
If I were to rate Resistance 2 vs Resistance 3, I would say Resistance 3 is the superior title despite the MP scale back. In fact, Resistance 3 is my favorite of the 3 games to date (with Resistance 2 being my least favorite actually). Resistance 3 is a solid game all around in the end. It is worth the price of admission for Resistance fans and console shooter fans alike, and will keep you entertained for quite some time.
Resistance 3 lands almost three full years after Resistance 2. The extra year in development, according to press reporting, was to be used to polish and refine Resistance 3 to levels unseen before in the series. I'm happy to say that Insomniac's extra efforts mark a dramatic increase in just about every facet of the game.
The story of Resistance 3 picks up where R2 left off. Nathan Hale is dead at the hands of Joe Capelli one of his squad-mates once the Chimera virus began overtaking and changing Hale. Capelli finds himself making a meager living in Oklahoma with wife, child a few fellow survivors. The Chimera at this point has completely overrun the United States and most major cities have fallen. New York seems to be the epicenter of the Chimera's terraforming activity though no human survivors of New York are known. Humanity is on the brink of extinction as Earth's weather continues to cool to fit the Chimeran plan for settlement.
The graphics in R3 have taken a dramatic turn for the better. In my review of Resistance 2 I was critical of the frequent graphic flaws and poor attention to detail. In R3 it's clear that Insomniac took more time and care in crafting the game world. The initial scenes in R3 start with a gritty grain reminiscent of films like The Road. The intent is to portray humanities desperation as the Chimera continue to erase the remaining pockets of humans from the map. As you progress through the game you'll be treated to several different areas of the United States from the humble towns and villages of the Midwest to the Industrial wastes of St. Louis and then to the frozen remains of New York. Each area has its own distinct feeling and style to separate it from the rest. In New York for example you'll find yourself running from ruined building to building advancing against a horde of Chimeran snipers and assortment of enemies.
My complaints about Resistance 2 included a lack of many of the gameplay features that made the original Resistance: Fall of Mankind so endearing too many of us. Insomniac has gone back and tweaked R3 to more closely resemble the original title. Vehicle segments are back in limited scope; this time you won't get to pilot any human or Chimeran craft but you'll at least get to ride shotgun and engage enemies as the gunner. There are various vehicle segments including a dramatic train sequence that will have you running from car to car and desperately fighting off a series of enemies. Another change comes to the health system. R2 incorporated a Call of Duty-esque regenerating health system. You could get shot up to pieces then hide and your health would regenerate. In R3 the health bar is back and there is no regenerating health system. This adds a sense of urgency and suspense when you're barely hanging on to life in an intense firefight sprinting for the green canister that is a health pack. Also back in R3 is the weapon wheel. Just like in the original Resistance, you'll be allowed to carry all your weapons concurrently and select them via the weapon wheel!
Speaking of weapons many of our old favorites from previous Resistance games are back including the Bullseye, Auger, Deadeye, Rossmore, Hedgehog grenade and more. New additions include the Cryogun, Mutator, and Atomizer. Each weapon is unique and useful in situations you'll be faced with throughout your play through R3. Each weapon in R3 also features a 3-tier leveling system; you gain levels by killing enemies. These levels serve to strengthen your weapons and unlock upgrades such as incendiary shotgun rounds for the Rossmore or an upgrade to the Deadeye that marks the enemy's heads for easier headshots. It's a fantastic addition to the series that adds much to the gameplay. Each weapon also features awesome alt-fires that are alternative uses that you'll find very helpful. The Auger for example has an alt-fire that creates a shield in front of you. The Atomizer generates a mini black hole that sucks enemies into groups that can be easily dispatched and so on.
At this point I have not yet tackled much of the online gameplay. My understanding is that the online multiplayer in R2 is a bit more contained and smaller than the massive, chaotic battles of R2. R3 also features an online cooperative feature. More on this in a future update to my review.
Much has been made of the online pass that Sony implemented with R3 and it's worth mentioning here. The online pass is a code that comes with new copies of R3 that have to be redeemed via the Account Management section of the XMB in order to access the online portion of R3. If you purchase R3 brand-new you have nothing to worry about, it's business as usual. However, folks who purchase R3 used will need to purchase a new code via the PSN Store for $9.99. There can be many accounts that can be used on one PS3 console. Two players (or more) with different accounts can play using the same online games on the PS3 system. Further you can activate the code on up to 5 different PS3 systems.
Lastly, though my review has been overwhelmingly positive thus far there are some minor stutters in R3 that should be mentioned. First, there are some technical issues; one for example in New York pitted me against a boss creature that unbeknownst to me couldn't be killed. This of course was a glitch but I still spent 45 frustrating minutes fighting the creature over and over again. A restart of the game fixed the problem. Second, the story is generally very good and does a great job conveying humanities last throes but there are moments that can only be described as "cheesy". Whenever Capelli is interacting with his wife and child it's almost painful to watch and worse on the ears. I get what Insomniac was trying to do but for the most part Capelli's family could've been done much better.
