Just not good enough - maybe next year?

Just not good enough - maybe next year?
I like to be fair, and I'll give credit where it's due. I'm not going to just bash something because it doesn't fit my needs, so please take a couple minutes to read this whole review in order to understand where this system performs well, and where it does not.So here's the deal. I really wanted to like this system. I like Amazon, a lot. I bought this because I assumed that being an Amazon company, the product hardware would be at a minimal build quality, and that did not disappoint. It's the control and functionality that falls very short for me. I'd be happy with it for the price I paid if the performance of the overall system were as good as the build quality of the cameras. They're not heavy and overbuilt, but they look to be better quality than you'd get from many brands, and the weatherproof design is a big plus, given that I live in the Midwest. The sync hub itself weighs about as much as a paperclip, but it does seem to do its job so, no complaints there. My first mistake was not understanding the core function of this system. I feel that's partially my mistake, and partially the lack of product definition. It's a motion detection system that only records short clips (by default its 5 seconds), and that's it. It will not record all the time, and it will not continue to record as long as motion is present. There is an option to extend your clip times up to 60 seconds and end them early if motion is no longer present, but that feature doesn't work particularly well all the time and tends to end clips while you're still watching someone do something. All of this is due to the nature of battery-powered devices. I'm an electrical engineer, so I get it. That being said, they've REALLY pushed this marketing ploy of a 2-year battery life, to the point that system performance is not meeting the minimum standard. I'll give you an example using the pictures I've uploaded.Picture 1, the two vehicles. This is the first instant that the motion detection triggered. That's a 4,500-pound Jeep pulling in on the right, starting with side-to-side motion for the camera and then straight-on, and the motion detection didn't pick it up until he was about a foot away from the edge of the parking pad. This thing triggers for shadows of tree branches on that same surface, so how is it not picking up an entire SUV? Current sensitivity is set to 7 (default is 6).Picture 2, the driver opens his door, gets out, walks around the back of the vehicle, approaches the camera and the image you're seeing is right when the motion detection finally triggered and recording began.Picture 3, a different tenant opens the door and walks out 11 minutes later, triggering the motion detection. He's quite tall, so he was very close to the camera. I notice that he looks into the Jeep, and by watching the film I can see the driver has actually walked in front of the camera again and returned to his vehicle, with the motion detection not being triggered at all. Keep in mind, this camera is literally mounted to the door trim that he walked out of and is aimed as far down as it can go.Picture 4 - oh wait, that doesn't exist, because the camera didn't trigger the entire time he was pulling his SUV off the parking pad. I'm not joking. It just missed a third of its known world moving in front of it. A neighboring camera did trigger from a different angle as he pulled out, which is how I know that this one failed, rather than the driver simply returning to the building. This is just one example that I can show with screenshots. There are quite a few other examples, and this system has been installed for less than 48 hours. So, simply put, we knew it couldn’t replace a constant surveillance system, and it’s not designed to, but this lack of triggering means it can’t even meet its basic operating needs. You WILL miss people coming and going based on this example.Let’s get straight to the pros and cons, cause I’m sure you don’t want to spend all day reading this.Pros:1) Price. For under $400 (I got mine for $300 during promotion) you won’t find much in the world of 5-camera systems with 1080p video. I keep mine at 720p for battery life, but the option of 1080p is there.2) The time from getting a notification, tapping on it and then loading the clip is very short. Calling for a live feed is slower, but the basic information is available from the clip quite quickly. Getting the notification is slower than tapping on it and loading the recent clip.3) Audio. Unlike some of the wireless/motion-trigger options, every camera has audio, which I’ve learned through shopping for a DVR/NVR system is not an assumption you can make in this market. In fact, DVR systems are especially limited in audio, if they have that functionality at all, and often require buying microphones and running additional cables. I haven’t seen a budget DVR system yet that offers more than 4 channels of audio, and by the time you’ve purchased all that additional hardware you could have just gotten an NVR system that is much more likely to support integrated audio with all camera feeds.4) Connectivity is good. My internet provider has been dropping performance randomly to the point that my phone can’t even load a website, but this Blink system seems to manage poor connection speeds well. I did have to move my sync module for better connection to the cameras, and there's one that it just won't quite reach all the time, but overall I can't complain.5) Camera settings can be changed through the app, from anywhere. Actually the app functionality as a whole is very good, though it lacks instructions.6) Easy installation. I truly believe this is the selling point of the system, above all else.7) Nighttime visibility is extremely good at close range (less than 15 feet). Very impressive, in my novice opinion.8) I really like the thumbnail of each recording, which helps you identify each event before loading it for easy location of a particular clip later.9) From what I hear, a sync module can support up to 16 cameras. This exceeds the capability of many other systems.Cons:1) Failing to trigger unless motion is RIGHT in front of the camera, or the camera is in a confined space, like an enclosed porch, with motion being very obvious. Every single trigger happened after I would have wanted it to begin recording, except where I’ve got a camera pointing right at an opening door. Even in my enclosed porch when I approach the camera from the side (still in view the entire time) it will not trigger until I'm within about ten feet of the camera.2) Very short clips by default. That Ford Explorer in my images is a vehicle I’d never seen before, and the only reason I knew it was my new tenant in a borrowed vehicle is because I happen to be at my phone and pull up the live feed long enough to actually see who got out. The triggered recording was just the last three seconds of the vehicle pulling in. If this were an unknown person, especially a vandal or thief, you’d never know if they were at fault because any number of people from any one of the clips could have been the culprit. The camera did not trigger again once he approached the building/camera.3) Limited cloud storage. Even with the medium video quality setting on all cameras, my storage is between 40 and 50% used up in a 24-hour period. Additionally, they advertise free cloud storage for a year, but do we have to pay for a subscription after that year?? this is something I haven't looked into, because I don't plan to keep the system.4) Missed notifications. This may be my phone or cell provider, but I doubt it. I often go to the recordings and see things I wasn’t notified about.5) Poor 2-way audio. I tried to heckle my gf as she was leaving last night and she couldn’t even understand me, and I couldn’t really hear her, and this is in an enclosed space. We gave up immediately based on her frustrated facial expression. She was literally walking right by the camera and said "it's really difficult to hear you."6) The only setup information is how to download the app, sync a camera to the hub and that’s it.Absolutely no information is provided with the kit to help you configure all the camera settings, even though the configuration and optimization of each camera is critical for system performance. Which video setting is a higher quality, “Best” or “Enhanced?” It’s Enhanced, which makes no sense based on what the word "best" means. We NEED instructions.7) Absolutely no camera mounting instructions provided. It’s simple, but you need to confirm what to do before you go get on a ladder and start making holes in your house, and that information is not included.8) Absolutely no information is provided which dictates that you have to actually arm the system before it will trigger and record anything. There are also no instructions to tell you what all the symbols inside the app are and what they mean. You’ll have to google everything, as you notice it or experience issues which should be very simply explained by the settings in the app. This system was installed for many hours before I googled the issue of no recordings showing up, only to find that you have to arm the system. Why would they default to off??9) After just 36 hours, with about 8 or 10 of those hours not having the system armed, I got a notification about one camera triggering frequently, and how this was going to impact battery life. I understand my property has higher traffic than most homes, but come on guys. Who is this system even for? When I was a kid, we (my mother as well) had friends coming and going at a much higher frequency than my tenants coming and going today. I understand battery life will be impacted, but Blink needs to understand that if you're going to design an entire system based on stating a 2-year battery life, you shouldn't be dictating how your customers use it in order to come even close to that. Rather than using two AA batteries, maybe make the camera capable of accepting either two or four batteries for extended life so your product meets the customer needs. Alternatively, sell us a solar module that can charge the batteries during the day to offer more regular use without compromising what we want to capture. In fact, I'd have purchased some solar chargers if they were reasonably priced and sustained the system so it was more functional. As I stated at the beginning, I don’t bash something because it doesn’t meet my needs. That begs the question, whose needs does it meet? It doesn’t trigger easily, the recordings by default are only 5 seconds, and while I adjusted the one by my door to the max of 60 seconds, it doesn’t recognize motion well enough to even stay awake as long as my gf takes to find my key on her key ring, so you’re definitely not going to catch a break-in or theft on camera unless it’s right in front of the lens, especially because there’s a minimum retrigger time of 10 seconds. We also have to consider that anyone living in a city is going to have a lot of approach angles to consider, with limited trigger time to catch someone on film as they round the corner before they’re too close to the structure or otherwise out of camera sight. This is the reason I got the 5-camera setup. The motion trigger, as I’ve stated, isn’t good enough based on these factors. This implies to me that someone with lots of space around the house could benefit from this system, BUT the system doesn’t trigger with things that are far away either. I ask again, who really is the prime customer for this product? I have a friend back home that has the original XT system and they seem to like it. They have a fenced back yard that it monitors, and another camera directly behind/above anyone standing at their door. The viewing angle is not good for seeing faces, but the close proximity does seem to give them the motion activation that my application lacks. It would seem you need to be RIGHT on top of the action in order to get reasonable system response. Keep in mind, these cameras just clip onto the base, and even in my application where I've got one mounted to the door trim it doesn't seem to activate with every passing person. These guys can be stolen in a half a second, because they've got to be right in the face of anyone approaching a door in order to be functional.I’ll end it here, for the sanity of all of us. I like the system in theory, and I like the cameras themselves, but the system simply does not meet my needs, and I can’t figure out who exactly would have all of their needs met by it. Most of these performance compromises are based around the battery life expectation that Blink has put on themselves as a means of marketing/advertising, but there are other wireless systems with quick recharging batteries made into them, or tiny solar panels for self-charging. Where this system exceeds expectations is with the app functionality, though it should come with instructions, or at least an easy in-app tutorial. The system is just not up to the level that it needs to be in order to take the market like they’re hoping it will. Shipping of this product was stopped a couple months ago, from what I've read, and I was excited to see the improvements in my own home. There is definitely still work to be done. I’ve submitted my return request and printed my label. I’ll likely be buying a Swann or Lorex constant surveillance system, which I understand is not the direct competitor of this product, but is what I need to ensure my property is supervised at all times.
