From the manufacturer
Can I play music to other Alexa devices or my Everywhere group with Safe & Sound?
Not at this time. Alexa and Safe & Sounds keep getting smarter over time, so you can look forward to more audio capabilities in the future.
Does the Onelink Safe & Sound require rewiring or professional installation?
The Onelink Safe & Sound is meant for DIY installation. Just remove your current alarm and bracket, and install Safe & Sound. Easy adapter plugs are included, so you don't have to rewire to install the alarm.
Once the Safe & Sound unit is wired into my ceiling, what are the next steps?
Once the alarm is installed, the unit will walk you through setup and Alexa integration with Onelink Home app. If you have more than one Safe & Sound, set each one up though the app as you install the units, before moving on to the next one.
How does the Safe & Sound nightlight feature work?
When set on autobrightness, the LED lights glow to light your route in the dark, and get brighter in the day, to ensure visibility in an emergency. You can turn off autobrightness, or adjust brightness and usage through the Onelink app.
Do the LED lights on Safe & Sound also indicate power?
The LED lights also indicate AC power is being received. When you disable the nighlight, 2 LEDs will glow green on the Onelink alarm, letting you know that you have AC power. If the LED is off, your alarm is running with battery backup.

Here are the benefits in the order that I value them (I'll go into detail below the list):
1. They're AirPlay 2 speakers, so you get whole-home audio if you're an Apple iPhone, HomePod, or AppleTV user.
2. They have built-in rechargeable batteries, so you'll never have to replace a 9v backup battery again.
3. They are HomeKit compatible, so you can monitor and control them from your iPhone's Home app.
4. They have a multi-color LED night-light that you can control or even automate via your iPhone's Home app.
5. They're trivial to install.
6. Oh, yea, they're a smoke & C02 detector.
1. AirPlay 2
First I'll focus on what I get the most benefit from - these are AirPlay 2 speakers that take advantage of the fact your home has power wired to all of your smoke detector locations, which means every bedroom and most public spaces.
Smart smoke detectors are boring, right? Yes, they are. But this is not just a smart smoke detector. It's a key part of an Apple-based-ecosystem whole-home audio solution. If that sounds interesting to you, you'll love these.
You can play music to one or all of your Onelink Safe & Sound from your iPhone or from any HomePod or AppleTV. They sync perfectly. So if you always wished you had a whole-home audio system but didn't have pre-wiring in your ceilings, now you do... since every home built after 1986 has AC power wired to every smoke detector.
The audio quality is surprisingly good and the devices work great. I have 6 of these in my home which I just in conjunction with some HomePods, and it's super nice to have music fill the home with one verbal request to Siri. (Pro tip: if you tell your HomePod to play music everywhere, it will play on all of your Onelinks.)
Even my wife uses them occasionally by playing audiobooks from her iPhone to the Onelinks so that she can listen to her books throughout the home without carrying around her phone.
2. Batteries
I don't need to go into this too much--tracking down a beeping smoke detector in the middle of the night is awful. These have built-in rechargeable batteries and you'll never have to get on a ladder to replace a battery again.
3. HomeKit
These devices are Apple HomeKit-compatible, which means they appear in the Apple Home app and you can control them with Siri.
4. Night Light
The night lights are helpful - they light hallways and stairwells. I use HomeKit's automation feature to change the color and brightness of the lights at different times of the day, so at sunset they glow orange and when I go to sleep the one in my bedroom dims to a very faint red, etc.
5. Install
With a ladder and a screwdriver, you can replace your existing wired smoke detector in about 3 minutes. Considering what you get in 1-4 above, that's pretty awesome. It's kind of genius to take advantage of the AC power in the ceiling to reduce clutter and give you whole home audio for 5-minutes per room?
6. Smoke & C02
Honestly, I have no idea... I've never had a fire in my house so they've never gone off! It's First Alert so we can assume they're at least as good as the smoke detectors I had before. That's not really why I bought them... if you just want a smoke detector that doesn't do anything else you can get a Nest.
7. Stuff I barely use, but works fine
I'm an Apple guy, so I don't use the Amazon features very frequently. I do occasionally use the built-in Alexa capability to turn off smart lights, etc. and it works. But I don't use Amazon music, etc. If you prefer Alexa/Amazon Music, I can say that it works - I've tried it and I've used it. But as an Apple person, I typically use them for the AirPlay 2.
#Frustration.
I’m sorry I ever bought these.
I purchased the OneLink Safe & Sound Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector for multiple reasons:
1. All (but 1) of my Kidde detectors are 9 years old
2. 2 existing Kidde detectors no longer function
3. I have many of my devices automated using Samsung SmartThings and Alexa
I actually purchased just 1 to see if I would like it. So far, I do however, it could be better - I hope their next version(s) improve
I installed the Safe & Sound in the first floor of my home in the central hallway. From here, it should service up Alexa from anywhere on the first floor, and be heard when Alexa responds. It will replace the Echo (Gen1) I currently have just in the family room. Installation was very easy. Here are a few tips:
1. If you already have an existing wired detector there:
A. Download the OneLink App. Follow the step-by-step instructions for installation and setup.
B. If your device is on a 5G WiFi network, step it back to a 2.5G before starting the app.
B. Remove it and use the OneLink adapters (if possible).
C. Loosen the screws enough to remove the old detector’s bracket. Don’t take them all they way out.
Installation and setup was actually quite easy - the app will talk you through it - even the Alexa setup.
I think I will keep it but I do want to note a few shortcomings:
1. The speaker is an upgraded speaker from the other Alexa-enabled devices from Amazon. It has a rich sounding bass. However, for music, it will get lost in a larger room. The speaker isn’t very loud and at “volume 10” it becomes distorted. In short, I’m not going to use something like this to replace my Apple Homepods.
2. The OneLink Safe & Sound is only compatible with Apple Home. Unfortunately, Apple Home tends to be the least compatible with other automation devices. For example, my Phillips Hue lights are compatible with Apple Home but my KwikSet locks and GE lights are not. Therefore, I have incorporated a Samsung SmartThings hub as a central point for all my home automation; where I can create scenes and trigger events based on time-of-day, sunrise/sunset, or the action(s) of a device triggering others. The OneLink Safe & Sound is not currently compatible with Samsung SmartThings. Since this is compatible with other wired detectors, I am going to try to incorporate a FirstAlert Smart detector which is compatible with SmartThings to see if that solves this shortfall. Stay tuned.
UPDATE:
If you are installed other OneLink by FirstAlert devices and are expecting these to tell you where the fire / carbon monoxide is detected, they say they do but they’d o not. In fact, I contacted FirstAlert about this and the were very nice - they opened a ticket o the issue - said it was known ... but then promptly closed the ticket without a resolution.
Dropping 1 star for this update; the lack of room notification when they advertised it would; compounded with their lack of effective customer services
