Tricky install… But once in *correctly*, a cheap alternative to ductless.
Latest update:All worked to end of cooling season 2021. Amazon finally had a sale and, I got another for the other bedroom to replace the old Kenmore. I will probably move the old Midea to the guest room and put this newer one in the master bedroom. Assuming, newer is better… But, since it is the middle of Winter, not doing that right away. Also, it was not supposed to be delivered until 2022. I hate these unwanted EARLY deliveries. I need this on my holiday charge card like I need a blizzard.----2021 update:I was able to link my Midea window AC with the Skill and therefore, to Alexa. After some time of non function.A few months ago, Midea F-up big time and, many lost Alexa for the AC. In middle of US July heat and humidity! Their Skill rating went to the pits. 2 stars. I lowered mine to 1 star. But, now it is working. I will give it a month and, raise it back to 4 stars. When it works, it works good. But, if it is not working, any app will go back to 1 star.To get Alexa Skill back, I first had to make a new Midea account password. This was one element that was broken that they seemed to fix. The other was the back end server just stopped working. Once I did that password update, I reloaded the Skill via the Alexa app. However, as predicted, the Skill seemed unable to find the AC unit. I ignored it and, sure enough, it had found it. (Why this happens so much across all kinds of devices and apps — Alexa, Apple, dozens of smart home devices, accounts, and other apps — and why the developers do not catch it, remains a befuddlement. I am now trained to just try it one more time then, quit and 9 times out of 10, it did find the device and all is fine.)So now I can say ”Alexa, turn Window AC to 72° F” and it does. Which it did for a whole year just fine, until Midea broke it.----Part 3:Despite the problematic install issues and design flaws I outline below, I like the unit. I have had it for over a year. My worries now is, just how long it will last! My other bedroom AC is a 12 year old Kenmore Energy Star and still works. But, I am so into the quite of this Midea unit, I want to replace it! However:You cannot find this Midea anywhere for a decent price. I began long before cooling season even began and, the price was nuts. When I check a week or so ago, the price was OK but, sold out. Clearly Midea is onto something here and needs to invest in more production and on fixing the various issues all the owners have discussed here!- Oh, one other small thing: I wish it had a fresh air port. The fresh air ports seem to no longer be provided on any brand but are handy when the humidity is low inside (due to the AC) but temp is high. If I open the small port, it sucks in just enough outside humid air into the blower into the room to bring it up a few percentages. Making the air cooler and not so dry. A feature useful in humid summer climates. Just a piece of plastic… maybe a small tube needed to go inside the connecting portion to the outside, for the U design. Diameter of a port is about that of a AA battery or two with an adjustable baffle to control how much outside air gets into the blower stream. Works great. I notice the change immediately. It is, essentially, adding in a little moisture to the AC air.Part 2:- The attached images show a few problems with installation. The large foam piece for the gap has a small ledge on it (rim?) which, the instructions are not fully clear on. But, as far as I can tell from the poor illustrations, it sits up and on the inside. Presumably to be an inside seal on the inside edge of the bottom of the window. The problem on my windows is that, it is just not working. The window comes to a stop at the right point but cannot get past that foam ledge. I added a piece to the bottom to bring it up in height and I think the window is stoping on the bottom of the “U” of the unit. No way to be sure though.- This leads me to the middle of the U in the unit. There are gaps in there. Foam is needed. But there is not dense and flat foam included. I'd be worried the remainder of the window gap foam, which is soft and goes on the inside, would absorb water and cause all kinds of issues. They need to include a higher density foam strip that can be placed on the bottom of the U so the window comes down on that to seal it off. No photo of his problem. No way to get a camera in there! There is also a small gap between the edge of the foam and the side of the U. I jammed some black foam in there (hard to see but in one of the photos closer in). This needs to be improved.- Another glaring gap, perfect for invasive stink bugs to get in or mosquitos, is under the unit. This too could be solved with a proper custom foam insert to slide into all the holes by the two rails and thinner gaps here and there. In the image, it shows that I did stuff some foam in but, totally inadequate! I honestly do not know how to fill this in. No, spray foam is not an option plus costly and hard to use for most home owners. The wood in the photos is to provide a better platform for the unit to sit on, otherwise it would be resting on a thin piece of vinyl window. It does not interfere with or cause any problems as it sits on the window sill on the inside of the home. The app has some UI and UX problems.- There is an option “Boost”. I have no idea what this does!- There is an LED button. This turns the LED and on off but does not provide visual feedback that the light is on or off! (I often run this unit not in the room to cool it down and, the LED will just attracts bugs so, in any mode, I like to turn it off. Remote LED on or off feedback is needed!)Cooling so far: Is quite fine!-------Part 1I need to run it for a while and then, give the full picture.Install IS NOT EASY. I have a design degree and even I was befuddled by the drawings in the manual. Some had obvious mistakes or were so oddly shown, they were of little help. The hardware for the install seems well made but, again, lack of clarity and bad instructions really make it a challenge.Despite taking a week to figure it out before I went past the install of the support bracket, some things are just not well thought out in the engineering for this. The unit DOES NOT center on the window. So if you install the support centered, the unit will be off center. I had to remove it, figure this out (them instructions mention this but, just one buried line, not a call out), and adjust the bracket. Even with that adjustment, the bracket was never going to let the unit seem centered in the window. The system of adjustment does not allow it.Once in and set, the next challenge is the foam. I am a designer so I am going to cut that foam perfectly! NOPE! forget it. The stuff is awful to cut clean. Even with a stainless steel ruler and a new blade, it is not a clean cut. When you slide the foam in, surprise, you need to add some layers to make it work. They thankfully give you those. But then, the WORST part was that when I had to pull the foam out to add to it, the sliding anti tilt bars JAMMED! Ugh. Now it is a second time I have to pull the whole unit out! The bars can jam into each other and totally lock in place. The fix is to take both in your hand and as though it is a steering wheel, turn them to the right. This allows the jam to unjam and they slide fine after. After getting all that fixed and foam cut right and installing. I found that the automatic horizontal louver moving is pretty anemic. Admittedly, I thought it was vertical too. So that whole thing is just a joke. I keep it off but, then the top flap drops down so much, it pretty much keeps the air only shooting out to chest height. Uhh, I want it to go up more to say, face height. The app is OK. It at first would not set up on my network (all Apple Airports) which is not typical of most devices. Usually they just go on and done. But oddly, when I quit the app to try again, it came up ON the network. So the network set up is fine but the app is buggy and does not show it is set up unless you quit it and open again.I have it in an attic like second floor in a Cap Cod home for a bedroom. Just under half the house plan. Needless to say, the BTUs needed for the second floor are about 16,000. So another 8000 unit in the other half of the second floor (another bedroom) do the job. Sadly, a small bath room remains a furnace. Why don't they make a 2000 BTU for small bathrooms? I'd buy it! Better yet, make it a heat pump too. The bathroom is an icebox in winter. It seems to handle average summer temps and humidity well in the Mid-atlantic USA OK so far (one day). We have a 90+ day soon and July is nuts here so, after July is over, I will have a verdict.More to come in update later!

Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2021
First, amazingly quiet. The TV can be at normal listening volume and at times you forget it's on, about the same as your average refrigerator compressor. Even on High setting with boost enabled it's no louder than a small table-top fan. What a remarkable change from even our previous, "modern" Frigidaire 12,000btu unit from the big box store.

The mini-split inspired construction, modern components and re-arranging of their position completely change how this thing works and how you should use it. The unit is meant to generally run all the time and simply cycle up and down as needed for maintaining your rooms temperature. This is different from traditional window units that cut on and off to chill the room. There are sensors connected to the fan and compressor and in auto mode they work harder or hardly at all maintaining the temp. For example, if my windows are all closed all day, it keeps the apartment at it's current the setting, ie 70º, with the fan and compressor barely running on a 80-90º day. If I open a window for a good length of time to water plants, cook, or have many people coming in and out of the apartment, or the afternoon sun hits the windows the unit will ramp up to overcome the warm air and cool things back down. It's a very subtle and set and forget situation and since it's generally so quiet you might only notice the fan moving air rather than any noise itself. There's NO loud dreadfull "ker-chunk, garrrrrrrr...." sound that clunks on and off, at all. Only noise similar to my old unit is on humid days you can hear the fan splash the accumulated condensation in the pan as it helps cool the outside components, this is minimal at best, and a whispy fan noise can be heard on high with the louver swinging up and down. I have no vibration noises either.

The app was simple to connect my iphone to the unit with QR code and steps you through the process. The app provides added functionality. It must connect to your 2.4Ghz Wifi. The app allows for "boost mode" which resolves some complaints of poor cooling power, it also can disable the beeps and LED indicators on the unit (I wish it would allow you to dim these). You can set cooling schedules, and choose "Express Run" which is basically a preset you can tell it to ramp to with one click. Most importantly it allows you to control the unit while away from home and provides inside and outside temp.

When you first get it installed run it at lowest setting, fan at 100% and in boost mode for up to 8 hours to bring the place down to the desired temp. Then you can switch out of boost mode etc. This may take a few hours to get everything cooled down. If you previously had no AC in your room, apt, home, realize everything is physically warm, your walls, couches, furniture, not just the air. Any AC has to deal with this and once your space is cooled, keeping and maintaining it at a cool temp is far easier than the first time.

The AC itself is small, while the inside portion extends forward into the room more than the previous units, the over all general size is *far* smaller than previous giant 12,000btu units. This fact and how it does allow more light and sight through the window is remarkable and adds value. Particularly for those of us in urban settings or with limited windows.

Total installation time took me a maximum of 45 minutes, that's far less than any other window mount / AC combo I've had. I watched the manufacture's 2021 tutorial videos on youtube and a few others ahead of time. One or two viewings of these videos and then following along while installing and it went smoothly, no issues. I have a pre-war apartment in NYC with aluminum double pane lipped windows. Because of decorative limestone outside below the window, the distance from the inside bottom of the sill to the outside wall meant I had to use the last hole on the bracket and took some wiggling and fussing to get it to sit perfectly Once it did it was perfect and at the perfect angle on a level. Tip: before proceeding, superglue the rubber feet, they are on loosely likely to fall off when adjusting the bracket. Cutting the supplied foam, stuffing extra bits into open area or over small holes was simple and I am very glad they give you plenty of variety to make a nice clean installation. For the side arm foam, measure twice and cut once, and before cutting label them so you know which side is which. I think if most people do their due diligence here before and during then installation the majority installations should be simple and straight forward. No other manufacturer has provided so much assistance and the methods are not complicated.

Cons:

The remote is quite large and unintuitive. As large as a cable box remote and yet ironically its missing some functionality that the app gives you. Perhaps they made functionality upgrades via software after they created the remote. Either way, it's a beast for an AC unit that will reside in a drawer indefinitely.

I don't use Alexa, or Google for control, but I would have liked Apple HomeKit integration to unify with other lighting and home controls. The app opens quickly however and is responsive.

No condensation drip line hole. Everything else is so well thought out, it would seem this is a simple thing to add for those who need it. Not that adding your own is impossible or anything but I'd prefer to avoid damage and a factory provided hole location would ensure there is enough condensate to help keep the coils cool, while keeping water from dripping on things below.

Shipping and ordering was an issue that was MOST aggravating, and I see that I am not alone here.
First, it took a week or more to actually place an order. Item would show available just like any other item on Amazon and delivery time would indicate "ships in 1-2 days", this for units sold at regular retail price from Amazon, (not the higher priced gougers.) Every time I'd try to complete the sale it restricted my address in NYC. Amazon CS said they are available and I should be able to place order but I could not. I tried numerous addresses in my account around the country they were all were restricted. Then early one morning it was available and the order went through. It was marked as shipped the next afternoon. But..... it didnt actually "ship." The Amazon warehouse printed the UPS label which marked it shipped on their site but it didnt leave for almost two weeks. During which the arrival time kept moving, and CS had no clue how to answer this except to offer a refund and cancelation. When it did start to move it was shipped from a NJ Amazon warehouse to NYC, transit taking only a day and a half. Look, two weeks for something like this doesn't bother me, if that's what it takes. Its the poor setting of expectations that is infuriating, not to mention that where I live being able to receive packages as they arrive is important to avoid theft. Furthermore I was ahead of a heatwave by more than a week, but it arrived afterwards! Had I known to expect this it wouldn't even be on my mind, but every day you wouldn't know if your order would be canceled or backordered or what. Because so many people had the same issue, I wasted time with CS trying to figure out where my product is and if I will actually receive it.

The UPS delivery man said they've delivered dozens in my neighborhood, I believe them, I've seen at least six on my walks around and I understand why, it's an amazing unit. Highly recommend.

This is a fantastic product for two reasons. It is QUIET, and it is energy efficient.

FIVE STAR PART: The unit installs in classic vertical sash windows, but unlike conventional window units, it separates the compressor, motors, and fans from the controls by allowing the lower sash to divide these elements. Brilliant: efficient moving components outside and cool, dry air inside. The space for the lower sash is also wide enough to permit a window blind to function in the gap. This allows light blocking, which is not something one would have thought important, but is, and it is very slick. The marketing literature talks about being able to operate the lower slider if you want fresh air, which seems silly. There is already a fan setting to bring in fresh air, and it is a fair bit of effort to make sure everything reseals when moving the sash. I think the marketing team went a little too far in this one and the notion detracts attention from the overall design excellence of the product.

It is very thoughtful to include a remote control for those needing one, and the voice access through Wi-Fi provides even more accessibility options. I am fortunate enough to not need these, and the on-board control layout of the unit is excellent! Although it took me a while to get used to a display that only showed the temperature setting and not the room temperature, it turned out that the unit is so good that there is rarely a difference anyway.

THREE STAR PART: You may have a little effort on your part to get the mounting bracket to work, since it is designed for specific sill configurations. A few people must be lucky, and it all works out, but our outer sill was too big. So, when the unit is installed, we put a conveniently sized brick on top of the sill (shown in the picture) and don’t use the rear angled support arms. We also put a thin piece of rubber between the metal of the mounting bracket and brick to reduce possible vibration transmission. (My calculations show it's very safe since the majority of load goes through the wall of the house in compression. Plus, the additional load is quite small. But we leave critical decisions of this nature to lawyers; think of this a shared experience from a questionable source.) Once you get the unit positioning sorted out, the mounting bracket is a dream, and next year's install will be easy-peasy.

I strongly recommend this unit! The price and effort are well worth it but do your homework.
